In the 1930s, the Italian national anthem "Il Canto degli Italiani" was considered a communist song. As a result, the fascist regime outlawed the song and ordered all remaining copies to be burnt. A group of Italians decided to resist this order by keeping one hidden copy of the song alive. At risk of being arrested and executed by Mussolini's fascist police state, they created a new variation of "Il Canto degli italiani." This version was called Bella Ciao and was sung as either an anti-fascist anthem or as a code for those who were hiding from fascism's cruel hand. The new version was composed by Ernesto Langeri, Umberto Bindi, Carlo Peroni, and Igino Rodolfi. After it became very popular in Italy in the 1940s and 1950s, many Fascists fled to Switzerland and founded a refuge camp there. To avoid detection by the fascist police state, they came up with a new variation of Bella Ciao that could be sung without detection. The new version was called "Bella Ciao Chiusa," which means "Closed Door Bella Ciao." This version used much fewer lyrics than the original so as not to add any attention to it. The lyrics to the new Bella Ciao Chiusa were: Mussolini's fascist soldiers were unable to comprehend even a few of the simple lyrics of the original Bella Ciao, let alone bother to learn more than a few of its several hundred words. This made it easier for Bella Ciao Chiusa to be made and still not draw attention from the fascist soldiers and police officers. The creators of "Bella Ciao Chiusa" gave credit for the new variation by saying it was created by singer Corrado Zanoni and an unknown person named "Orfeo." Zanoni was an alias for Gino Paoli, who later made it popular in Italy. Paoli was a communist writer and singer. Paoli, along with other other anti-fascists, wrote the first Bella Ciao Chiusa lyrics available. "Bella Ciao Chiusa" is still sung today as a protest against fascism and the injustices of the world. It is most commonly sung at protests held throughout Italy and in Europe, but is known to be sung by protestors all over the world.
